Narrative: the art of telling a story, stories, tales, chronicle. The photograph/photographs tell a story.
Mood Board
my ideas
Generations: One of my ideas for this projects is generations and times changing.
- recreating old photos, childhood photos, photos from the past.
- taking the same photo in the same place of people dressed in different eras, e.g 70s 80s 40s.
- taking a photo of a daughter, mother and grandmother {or other family members} showing the different generations.
- show a child's room or something in there room and compare it with a adult or teenagers room showing the changes over time.
Gymnastics/ sports: to show different sports ans stories in them
- learning a new move, gymnastics
- scoring your first goal, netball, football, rugby
- winning a competition or match
- different processes in sports
- the process behind the sport not just the good parts, the stuff you don't see
Your surroundings: taking pictures of the places around you and where you spend time and live. Using joiners to portray this.
- Take a range of photos, of places that have a meaning to you, where you spend a lot or time, and relate to a certain emotions.
- take the photos of places that have memories attached to them and somehow include certain some words
- take picture of objects that have a meaning to you or a memory/emotion attached to them
FINAL IDEA: I am going to take photos of my dogs in a triptic of different process on their walk.
- getting ready to go on the walk
- getting into the car to go to the place
- starting the walk
- throwing a stick
- jumping over a wall
- splashing in a river
- getting muddy
- meeting another dog
- going home and falling asleep
David hockney
David Hockney is a British artist from Bradford. He was a huge part of the pop art movement in 1960 and was a very influential person in 20th century art. He is a painter and photographer.
He creates these photos to tell a story and so his photos are different and have a different perspective. He also wants to focus on the smaller details and not just the big picture.
His photos are very different and unusual. He layers lots of photos that are zoomed in to create a big put together photo. Sometimes he changes the time of day the photos are taken and the layering is sometimes layered oddly and differently. The image almost looks distorted. Here are some examples of those pieces.

He also creates photos in collages again but in a slightly different manner, this time there is no layering. He creates composite photographs. He takes lots of photos and then collages them together with spaces in between. Here are some examples.
Critical Analysis
This photo was taken in a prehistoric museum near Palm Springs, it was taken in 1982. David Hockney takes these joiners to create a story. He also believed people thought photography was to easy and simple, so he wanted to create some thing that was more complex that had meaning and a story behind it. He also thought that not every detail is captured in one photo, so he believes that the joiners are able to capture and therefore include every single detail. To create this photo he would have to taken lots and lots of photos and then use Photoshop to collage all the photos together.

David Hockney has used lots of interesting texture for the ground, making it look almost futuristic. The silhouette of the man is a good composition as the it's just off centre, drawing attention to it but not so much that you don't focus on the other things around. The mood of the photos is very calm as there is almost no one around and the mood of the black and white/monochrome image adds to this feeling giving the overall image a relaxed atmosphere. I like this work because it's calm and also it has a odd feel as there is a prehistoric dinosaur in the photo and also a car and both things look almost out of place but still fit.

DUANE MICHEL'S CRITICAL ANALYSIS
- These photographs were taken in 1972 by Duane Michel's. He is from McKeesport Pennsylvania, United States
- This photograph is called 'Chance Meeting'.
- In this picture two men are passing each other in the street; a normal situation. However there seems to be more going on than it initially seems. It involves them looking back at each other.
- This artist was inspired by gay rights and hiding sexual orientation.
- Its one of many photos that were focused on gender.
- The photo explores this inspirations and Duane Michel's said “It involves gay cruising, two guys on the street attracted to each other, passing like ships in the night".
- When this photo was taken being gay and anything around that was considered to be wrong and still thought of very badly, so Duane's ideas we quite controversial and different. Things were starting to get better though as in 1973 homosexuality was still considered a mental disorder list in America. There were still a lot of laws and views on gay rights that needed to be changed.
- You can tell his photo has been influenced by this as both men look awkward and resistant to look at each other.
- All the photos have been taken in the exact same position and have been turned into black and white. They have been collaged together. They almost look old fashioned which could link to the fact the people still didn't believe in gay rights which are old views, he clearly believed that things needed to change.
- The atmosphere of this photo is very secretive and mysterious. It makes you feel as if you want to know what's going on and want to hear the back story. Originally you look at the photo and think its a basic photo but you look closer and realise there is more depth to it and it makes you think and wonder.
- I like this narrative shoot as its mysterious and unusual, I also like how it's not what it seems and with out research you would not know what was going on in the photographs. It has influenced me to think more about why i am taking my photographs and the meanings behind them.
MY IDEAS
Final Idea: I am going to take photos of someones hand writing out an emotional letter to someone, each photo the page being filed in more. Then finally the last photograph will be the paper splashed with water because they have been crying. They are writing to a family member who lives far away because someone has passed away.
triptychs
A triptych is a series of three sections of photos, painting, ect. They often have a story/narrative to them. They were originally used for religious story telling.
adde adesoken
He is a photographer from Germany who created his own projects called 'Triptychs of strangers'. He creates his Triptychs vertically downwards. He takes a picture of a face, body and shoes, there are some examples in my mood board above. He creates these photos to try and reveal people real personalities, and he wants to do it creativity. This tells the story of the strangers on the street and lots about them and their individuality. Here are some examples of his work.
I am very interested in the way Adde Adesoken has used triptychs to explore range. He has used theses images to explore the range of a person's personality and interests and I think this is very effective. I would like to explore this idea of demonstrating range through triptych images, whether that is a range of personality, action, movement, feelings or activity.
my narrative project
My narrative is about my dogs, they are two springer spaniels. I am creating triptychs images of the dogs on their walk. A walk is a highlight and significant part of their day but one picture would not tell the whole story. I was inspired my triptych images. My biggest inspiration for this shoot was Adde Adesoken. He uses three images to reveal a personality; I wish to use my three images to fully reveal the personality and emotions of the dogs on their walks. I also want to take his idea of using a triptych image to explore range. I hope this project will allow me to focus and explore images that demonstrate a range of emotion, action or movement. I was also influenced by the work of David Hockney who said that 'not every detail is captured in one photo'. I also want to explore this idea also through my work on triptychs.
shoot one
GETTING READY
This is a triptych image of the dogs leaving to go on their walk. In the first picture they are having their leads put on, in the second one dog is leaving the front door and in the third they are getting ready to walk.

final shoot
I am pleased that my triptych work has allowed me to focus on David Hockney's idea that 'not every detail is captured in one photo'. I feel that my many triptych images from each shoot demonstrate this well, as it is clear that a single image could not have shown the detail or conveyed the same range of emotion and activity as the triptychs have been able to. This has also allowed me to explore my ideas from my examination of Adde Adesoken's work about a triptych reflecting a range of emotion, activity or movement. I also feel that they have allowed me to explore Adde Adesoken's idea of revealing more about something or someone through a triptych of images. I feel the triptychs clearly reveal more about the personality and emotions of the dogs when going on a walk than a single image could do. To edit and create my final piece I am going to experiment with different techniques on Photoshop, especially with color and possibly experiment with different contrasts. I wanted to incorporate my work on both monochrome and colour and I wanted to use this to emphasise the middle or central image of the triptych.
I explored this idea using some images from shoot 3. I am pleased with the use of monochrome and colour and I feel that it can be used effectively to emphasise the central image, however I feel it would be more effective if the central image was the coloured image and the first and third images were the monochrome.
I want to employ this technique to some of my images in shoot 5. I was really pleased with this shoot and enjoyed taking the action shots. I think it portrays really well David Hockney's idea of needing more than one image to capture a full range of detail. A dog jumping is an amazing physical feat and I think the triptych and my exploration of using colour and monochrome images could reflect this effectively. It will also give me the opportunity to use a triptych image to demonstrate range as Adde Adesoken did.

I was pleased with this final piece as I think it effectively demonstrates the aims and intentions of my narrative study. It clearly demonstrates my exploration of David Hockney's statement that 'not every detail is captured in one photo'. A dog jumping could never be captured in one image and I feel my triptych clearly captures a jump in multiple dynamic images. This range of movement also clearly demonstrates my exploration of using a triptych image to explore range. This time demonstrating a range of movement and this clearly reflects my thoughts after studying the work of Adde Adesoken.
Finally I was really pleased how my editing of colour and monochrome emphasised the central image effectively. This mid air jump is the most powerful image and I feel this is clearly highlighted by the use of a colour image between two monochrome ones.

refined final outcome
I have decided that the images below together represent the theme of Narrative. The show a story better, of dogs going on a walk, getting muddy and finally getting washed. They show a stronger representation of a narrative and I feel they represent my ideas and story better.
