MOOD BOARD
lichtfaktor
Licktfaktor is a group of artists, performers and photographers who create light trails, they are based in Germany. They use long exposures on their cameras and use light to paint pictures. As the shutter speed is open for so long it captures all the light. They also have created small animations using light trails for adverts (their most famous one is Talk Talk's advert). Their main inspiration is graffiti and street art but also other light trails they wish to create. They normally plan before they go to a shoot but they are also inspired by their location. They believe that it is an evolution from graffiti, light graffiti. They quoted “For us it is an evolution and a chance to animate graffiti characters in urban landscapes. But in general we would say that graffiti is graffiti and light graffiti is light graffiti.” Here are some examples of their work...
shoot one
Plan:
My aim is to create simple and basic shapes using light trails, for example a heart, a triangle, a star. I want these photos to be clear and in focus. I will conduct the shoot in a classroom. Lichfaktor was my inspiration for this shoot, and their work with light trails. I will use long exposure to create these images, so the lens is going to be left open for between 10-15 seconds. I am going to need a iphone (for the light trail), a camera and a tripod.

These are my first example of light trails. These were taken in school, in a class room. I used a iPhone torch to create the trails. I had to use a tripod to keep the camera steady because the lens had to be open for 10-15 seconds. I tried to create simple shapes with light for example a heart, star and a smiley face.
Critique:
WWW: I like the photos I have completed, my favourtie one of the three is the star one. They are in good focus and the light/shape is really clear.
EBI: To make it better better the backgorund could be darker (block the light out) and also the people creating the light shapes run out of the photo before the timer end so as they are not in the photograph.
Next Steps: I am going to conduct my next shoot in a darker enviroment and also have the people run out of the photos at the end.

shoot two
Plan:
To improve from my last shoot I need to make sure the room/place is darker and that the people run out of the photo afterwards. I need to do this because it will make the light trails more sharp and more effective. The people need to run out after creating the shape so they're not in the photo. My aims are to create better photos in a darker enviroment. I want to create more complex shapes and possibly pictures with the light trails. I want to create an under the sea scene and also a night sky scene using light trails, but also experiment with colour by using tissue paper over the light. I am going to conduct the shoot in the cuboard at school, so its darker. I was inspired my Lickfactor for this shoot. For the shoot I will need a camera, tissue paper, iphone light and a tripod.

These photos were taken in a classroom cupboard in school. I have created scenes using light trails, one is a whales tail in the sea, another is a the night sky with stars and the moon the other is a whirl pool. I used a camera to take these photos, the camera was on a tripod to keep the photo steady. The camera was set to the TV setting on between 10-20 seconds, to allow time to create and take the picture.
Critique:
WWW: The photographs I have taken have developed since my first shoot, as they are more complex and also incorporate colour. The people who have created the light images are also less noticeable in them.
EBI: I think the enviroment where I take the photos still needs to be darker and I also think that I need to conduct the shoot outside of a school enviroment, and outside. This will give me a greater scope for the background and greater control over the level of light. It will also give me greater scope for creating larger images.
Next Steps: I need to take the photoshoot outside and at night time.

shoot three
Plan: As I wish to explore a darker environment I plan to shoot this next shoot at home when it is fully dark. I want to explore some different shapes and images and linked to my alphabet project I wish to explore making light trail letter images. This has been planned in advance because the letter images will need to be created in reverse as the photograph will be a reflective image. The letter shapes have therefore been planned in advance and shared with the person who will be creating the light images that I will be photographing. As before I will be leaving the shutter open on a long exposure and will therefore need a tripod. I am still planning to work with a phone torch light and therefore I will need a phone, a camera, a tripod and a person to create the shapes.
Critique:
WWW: The plan for the reverse letter images has worked well as I think all the letters are clearly visible. The fully dark environment has also made the images sharp and stand out well. I think this has worked well for letters as they need to be read.
EBI: I cannot decide how I feel about the effect of the rain on the images. In some images I feel as if it has blurred them too much and affected the overall clarity of the letter image but in other pictures I feel as if this reflects the natural environment in which they were taken and I feel as if the shapes made by the rain add to the uniqueness of the letter images. In letter 'L' I particularly like the way it has made a light sparkle on the letter. Whilst the deep darkness has created clear images I'm not sure I am happy with no background imagery as I feel this could make the images look sterile and unnatural as if they had been generated by computer and not by hand by a photographer.
Next Steps: As I want my images to be clear but also to look natural and relate to and be complicated by their background image. I therefore need to explore background images that will complement the light trails.

shoot four
Plan: I want to explore how different background images can complement the light trails instead of detracting from them. I therefore want to try taking light trail pictures in an environment that will frame or focus on the light trails. I will continue to work with the light in a phone and will continue to use long exposures. I will therefore need a phone, a camera and a tripod.
Critique:
WWW: I am really pleased with the way in which the perspective and line created by the bridge frames the light trail images. I think this is particularly effective in the spiral image. I am also pleased with this particular image as the person creating the light trail is not visible and I think this looks more effective. I also like the way in which some of the urban lighting helps to frame the picture and leads your eye into the centre of the picture where the light trails are. I like the combination of the different coloured urban lighting and light trails in the same picture and would like to explore this more.
EBI: Whilst I like the way in which the bridge frames the picture, the rest of the urban background is a little distracting and not very aesthetically pleasing. I would therefore like to explore using more aesthetically pleasing background images to frame the image. I would like to explore the use of different coloured urban lighting in light trail images.
Next Steps: 1) Explore different background images which will frame light trail images. 2) Explore the different colours within urban lighting and the ways in which this can be used in light trails.

shoot Five
Plan:
For this shoot I need to experiment with taking photos in different environments and the use of urban lighting to create different coloured light trails. My aim is to go out onto a bridge over a motorway and capture the light trails from the car lights. I am hoping that the image from this bridge will create a good background image and that the car lights will create both a white and red light trail. I am going to have the lens open for longer in this shoot, about 30 seconds. I am going to conduct the shoot on a bridge on the way to Yate, looking over a motorway. My inspiration fot this shoot is Lichfaktor. I will need a camera and a tripod for this shoot.

Critique:
WWW: I think the photos where there were more cars were more sucessful as there were more light trails, and they were more obvious and defined. I prefer the photos taken later in the shoot. The sunset became more defined and dramatic as the time passed and I liked the effect of this on the photos. It also made it easier to see the difference in colour between the white and red light trails. I think the light of the sunset complimented these coloured light trails. I also liked the darker photos at the end of the shoot as the light trails are very bright and colourful and the darkness makes them become the visual focus of the picture.
EBI: Whilst I think the car lights made effective light trails I didn't like the fact that I was unable to alter or explore the shape that the lights make. The shape of the road and the position of the bridge over the road made that only one shape was possible. I think the next shoot would be more effective if I had more control over the shapes of the light trails or was able to explore different road and traffic patterns and the ways that this affects light trails.
Next Steps: I need to find an outside setting where I have more control over the shapes of the light trails that I am able to produce. I would like to develop these ideas in two ways. First of all I would like to explore an outdoor environment where I control the shape and size of the light trails using a camera light and also where I can explore a variety of natural light levels within a new natural environment. Secondly I would like to explore car/traffic lights in more depth by exploring how road structures, urban environments and traffic changes affect the light trails produced. I 'd also like to look at the different ways in which an urban environment and urban man made lighting can add or detract from the light trail images.

shoot six
Plan:
For this shoot I need to make sure the light trails are bright and focused, and I need to make sure that I am able to extend my creativity by having greater control over the shape of the light trails. I also want to take the photos in a new different outdoor environment. I was happy with the way the bridge framed the light trails in shoot four and I am therefore going to take photos by a lake on a jetty with a mountain landscape in the background as I am hoping the lines of the jetty will create a frame for the images in a similar way. I am going to go back to the idea of using a simple trail where I am able to control the shape of the light trail. I want to create diffrent shapes like fishes and moons. I am going to conduct this shoot in the Lake District on a jetty overlooking Derwent Water Lake. My inspiration for this shoot is Lichfaktor. Fot this shoot I will need a phone light, camera and a tripod.

These photos were taken on my holiday in the Lake District. These are photos at Derwent Water Lake, on a jetty. They were taken in the evening around 6 o'clock. I used a phone light to create the shapes. I used simple shapes as I thought it would make it more effective because of the landscape behind and the jetty sides. I created a moon, star, heart, fish, circle and triangle.
Critique:
WWW: I think the simple shapes against a more complex background is very effective. The mountains in the background and jetty work well in the photographs. I like the way the posts of the jetty frame the light trails images. I think the pictures taken in the middle of the shoot (the star and moon light trails) are the most effective as the level of natural light/dark means that the light trails stand out clearly, the person creating the light trail is not too visible but it is not so dark that the posts framing the light trail or the mountain in the background are not visible. I think this has begun to explore well my first aim from shoot five.
EBI: It would of been more effective if I had a sunset and this would have added more colour into my background image. It also would have been better if the person creating the image had been able to move and not leave their image in the photograph. Whilst the jetty complimented and framed the images really well, it also restricted the variety of shapes and patterns that could be created. It also meant that the person making the images didn't have much freedom of movement and wasn't able to move out of the final image. It would have been better if the person creating the image was able either to move out of the image or to have the freedom of movement to appear to interacting with the light trail image.
Next Steps: To find an aesthetically pleasing environment that doesn't restrict either the shape of the light trails or the ability of the person creating the light trail image to move out of the picture at the end. Also to explore how people could appear to be interacting with the light image. This will help me to explore further my aim from shoot five.

shoot seven
This shoot was taken in the lake district. They were taken in the evening. I used a phone light to create the trails by leaving the lens open for 10-30 seconds. For this shoot i want to include people appearing to interact with the light trails in to the shoot. I wanted it to appear as if they were using the light. I also wanted to add things that fit with the background, e.g the waves by the lake.
Critique:
WWW: Overall I was pleased with this shoot. I was very pleased with the location as it fulfilled my intentions from previous shoots. It allowed the person creating the light image a greater range of movement to create and leave the images and it created a pleasant background image that could be linked to the light images.
In the first three images I managed to make sure that no person appeared in the image. The person creating the image kept moving and ran out of the picture at the end of the shoot and I was pleased with how this meant the image stood alone in the environment. I was particularly pleased with the wave and fish tail image as I think this complements the location.
Using two people in the shoot also worked well as It allowed the person to look as if they were interacting with the light even though it actually wasn't that person who created the image. This worked well in images five and six as it look as if they are creating the light. I think the light images created around the person in pictures nine, ten, eleven, twelve work well as the light shapes imply a sense of fantasy and mystery and I think this compliments the wild, natural environment. I was also pleased with the use of two image in image four. The second person created the light trail, then stood still hiding the light trail at the end of the exposure. This looks as of both individuals are interacting with the light but that nobody just stood still to make it.
I feel that this is a good exploration of my first aim in shoot five.
EBI :Whilst I was very happy with many aspects of this shoot I was a little disappointed by the lack of colour in the shoots and would have liked to include a greater range of colour within the shoots. With this in mind I will begin to explore the second aim of shoot five and begin to consider how the different colours of urban lighting can be used more effectively in light trails.
Next Steps: Explore urban environments that provide a greater more aesthetic range of backgrounds than shoots four and five but allow me to explore the use of colour more than shoots six and seven.

shoot eight
Plan: In shoot eight I plan to explore how the urban environment can provide an interesting and aesthetic backdrop for light trail photography whilst also providing a range of coloured lighting. To do this I aim to shoot pictures in Bristol at night using a tripod and using long exposures. I plan to carry out shoots in different locations around the city to create a variety of different backdrops and a variety of different coloured urban lighting.
Critique:
WWW: I was pleased with the backdrops in these pictures as I feel the iconic images of Bristol Suspension Bridge, Temple Mead Station and Park Street worked really well to compliment the light trail images. I was also pleased that these different locations provided their own range of static urban lighting that also complemented the light trail images.
The range of traffic we encountered also worked very well to create different coloured and different height light trails. The images were created by buses, police cars and ambulances as well as cars.
EBI: Whilst happy with the backgrounds and range of colour within these images I was still frustrated by my inability to control the light trails that would be available to photograph. I could only photograph what happened to pass me in a certain location and I wanted more control over the creation of the images. For this reason I wanted to explore other ways in which a light image could be created that didn't rely either on circumstantial urban lighting or the use of a phone light.
Next Steps: To explore different ways of creating light for light trails. This should be a light trail that can be controlled by the person creating the light trail.

shoot nine
These photos were taken on a beach on my holiday. In my previous shoot (shoot 8) I had identified the wish to explore new light sources for light trails. I therefore began experimenting with different ways of creating light trails. I didn't use a phone light this time I used a different technique, by putting steel wool into a whisk that is attached to a dog lead, the person creating the light trail then lit the steel wool on fire and then spun it around. Spinning it around caused sparks to fly off creating light trails. The steel wool was then spun around in lots of different ways. I used the TV setting on the camera and had the lens open from between 10-30 seconds.
Shoot ten
Plan: I was pleased with dramatic images I had taken in shoot nine and wished to explore this further in a different environment. I therefore plan to return to a more urban environment to explore how the use of different structures would affect the light trail images created by steel wool. I plan to explore this technique in subways and under bridges where the sparks will hopefully bounce off the surrounding structures to create more light trails.
Critique:
WWW: I found excellent locations on this shoot which really allowed me explore and develop this technique further. I was really pleased with this technique as it produced very dramatic results again. I was especially pleased with the way the sparks bounced off the sides of the subway and bridge to create further light trails which then framed the central image. I was also pleased with the way in which multiple lines of light trails are included in one image and liked the fact that shape could be made on a horizontal or vertical plane or on both.
EBI: These images are very dramatic and dazzling but by this very nature they detract from the location in which they were taken and I missed this aspect from earlier shoots. I also missed the variety of colour because even though these images are very striking they lack a variety of colour.
Whilst spinning the lead on both a horizontal and vertical plane made it possible to create a variety of different shapes, it was hard for the person creating the image to control this to a great degree as the steel wool was on fire and was only lit for a short period of time so the image needed to be created very quickly.
Next Steps: In my final shoot I want to find a way of relating the light trail to the location in which it is taken, whilst still creating multiple light trails but in a variety of different colours. Whilst doing this I also want to be able to have control over the shape of the images made.

shoot eleven
Plan: In this my final shoot I want to incorporate the best ideas from my previous ten shoots. I therefore wish to carry out a shoot which will do the following:
1) Allow interaction between the light trail and the location in which it is shot.
2) Use a light source that is controllable so the light trail creator can control the patterns and images.
3) Use a light source that will create multiple lines of images not just one.
4) Use a light source that will create a multi-coloured light image.
I plan to carry out this shoot in a harbour location and create images that will relate to both the sea and boats within this location. I have a lighting rod that has different coloured lights. I am hoping that this will create both multiple lines of light as well as different coloured lines of light. Whilst more cumbersome than a phone, I am hoping that this light source will be more controllable than either the steel wool or urban traffic lighting.

Critique:
WWW: I was really pleased with this final shoot as I feel it has incorporated the best ideas from all my previous shoots as laid out in my plan.
The lighting rod worked well, it wasn't too cumbersome and was very controllable by the light trail creator. It created multiple multi-coloured light trail lines in a variety of different shapes.
I also think the images that were created relate very well to the location. I think the wave shapes in the first five images link very well to the sea in the background and I think the implication of 3D shapes in images one. two and five were particularly effective. The waves in image nine were meant to reflect the sea surging over the sea wall during a storm (I had witnessed this in this location on a previous day) and I think this image conjures up this stormy feeling really well. The sixth, seventh and eighth images were linked to ideas of lights being used as a warning or alert out at sea and again I think they do this really effectively. In the final four images the light trails were used to create the idea of the sea and waves moving around the boats. I also think has been done very effectively to create both the image of both calm and story seas.
In conclusion I was very happy with this shoot as I feel it incorporates all the ideas I have explored in my light trails project. I have therefore chosen the following image as my final piece.

I am very pleased with this final image as it successfully incorporates my final aims as it uses a multi imaged (more than one line), multicoloured, controllable light trail to create an image that links to it's location. It works well to create the image of stormy waves breaking over hull of fishing boats. The Lichtfaktor artists that I explored at the beginning of this project use light trails to 'paint with light'. I feel that this concluding piece clearly demonstrates that this project has culminated in me being able to successfully paint with light like the Lichtfaktor artists.
